If it isn't measured, it's a guess.
Real Ear Measurement (REM) places a very thin probe microphone in your ear canal, beside the eardrum, while the hearing aid is running. We see the actual sound arriving at your eardrum at every pitch, compare it to the prescriptive target for your hearing loss, and adjust until the two match.
Industry surveys put the share of providers who routinely perform REM at roughly a third. Which means most people wearing hearing aids have never had theirs verified.
